Welcome to my second fortnightly update on the progress of our new school. The first milestone we have reached is that we have had our final design meeting with the architect and construction team. Two weeks ago we had a similar meeting and the decisions we made there have been transformed into initial drawings and designs which were great to view. The next step for these is that they are scaled up for the contractors to use in order to begin construction.
Last week, Willmott Dixon Construction and the project team from the Education Funding Agency met with representatives from Sport England to discuss some of the planning conditions. While there are still some finer points to determine, the meeting was positive and things have moved in the right direction.
Coinciding with the Sport England meeting was another meeting with the PE staff at school. We discussed the internal layouts for the sports hall, multi use games area (MUGA) and playing fields. This also included deciding on the additional equipment we will require to further enhance our sporting offer. These plans are now being fed into the design team for review.
In addition to the playing fields, we have also been determining the fencing and security around the school. There are a combination of fencing solutions being put forward, but most importantly for us the school site will have a secure boundary around it and controlled access to the entrance.
Finally, this week I visited a recently constructed school that has installed a similar heating and cooling system to the one we are are due to have in our building. Heating and cooling has long been a challenge for schools, particularly when you have a large concentration of pupils in one space. The system proposed is an energy efficient modern design, which draws air in from outside and then either heats or cools it. Now that I have seen it in action, I am confident that it is the right choice for our school and will provide the comfortable learning environment our pupils deserve.
I hope this provides some insight into the work that has been taking place since my last post and I will update you again after half term.
